Reformation Hymn Sing
Sunday, October 1, at 2:30 p.m.
Sing and “pray twice” as you celebrate the music of Martin Luther – hymns like
A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, From Heaven Above to Earth I Come, and Lord Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word – and find out how the Reformation influenced church music through tunes and texts at a Music of the Reformation Hymn Sing on Sunday, October 1, at 2:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. Retired pastor Terry Peterson will provide background on Luther’s times and information on some of the 39 hymn texts Luther wrote. Bruce Bengston, Director of Music at Luther Memorial, will play the organ and lead the singing. The Hymn Sing will be followed by snacks, conversation and a sampling of Reformation beer. There is no charge for the event, but a free will offering will be taken to offset costs.

Reformation News and Brews

Sunday, October 15, from 3:30 to 7:45 pm
Reserve Your Spot at www.tiny.cc/BrewsNews
Taste the “spirits” of the Reformation while exploring the life and times of Martin Luther at a Reformation News and Brews Tour. The tour includes a sampling of Reformation beer and stops at two local brewing houses with the opportunity to sample local beers and learn about Martin and Katie Luther. The cost of $20 per person covers the coach transportation and tasting of the Reformation Beer only, and does not include costs associated with the tasting at Ale Asylum, the tasting and dinner at Next Door Brewery, or gratuities for the coach driver, bartenders, or other servers.

Participants gather at St. Stephen's Lutheran at 3:30 p.m. to await the tapping at 4:00 p.m. of a keg of home-brewed ale made from Katie Luther’s recipe. At 4:45 p.m. participants board a chartered bus and travel to the Ale Asylum while learning facts about Martin Luther along the way. After sampling optional flights of beer, the group continues to Next Door Brewery at 6:15 p.m. for more optional sampling and dinner. During travel time, facts about Luther's life, times, and theology will be shared. At the end of the tour, participants can continue discussion around the table, just as Luther did in his own home and in his own time.

This is an educational and social event, a time to meet others, exchange ideas, share thoughts and gain information. Martin Luther sparked the reformation of the church in 1517 and encouraged the church to engage in social justice issues. Luther was not afraid to bring the tenants of the church into the marketplace or into the political arena of his times. Exploring Luther's theology in a congenial setting can lead to a raised awareness of what the church can accomplish and the great need for Christ's love, acceptance and generosity in our society and our world today. Space is limited, so please reserve your spot now. Sign up at www.tiny.cc/BrewsNews
